Feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel 2008

This news is a little bit late, but better late than never.

July 16 is the feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, and similar to last year's celebration, a novena mass was held every afternoon at Carmel of the Holy Spirit, Subic, Zambales. Home of the Carmelite Nuns and the OCDS, St Teresa and John of the Cross Community.

This year we were truly blessed for not only the bishop of the Diocese of Zambales, Bishop Florentino Lavarias, D.D. and the Diocesan Priest of the province held a con celebrated mass in the morning but joining them too was Bishop Teodoro Bacani, D.D.

Aside from this, a con celebrated mass was also held in the afternoon with Rev. Fr. Gerry Orbos, SVD leading the celebration.

Unluckily for me, I was not able to attend the celebration in the afternoon, although I was able to attend the mass in the morning. It was my girlfriend Richelle who was able to attend the afternoon mass in which she took this picture via her cellphone camera.

    My Promotion to Novice 1

Greetings from the One we know Loves us!

For the past week I wasn't able to post anything on my two blogs. Reason... 'been preparing for one of the most awaited time in my journey to Mt. Carmel.

Yeps. Last Sunday, the 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time, seven of us form St. Teresa of Jesus and John of the Cross Community, Subic, under going formation as Aspirants were promoted to Novitiate 1. Joining the event are two from the Province of Bataan who had their First promise as an OCDS.

The event was celebrated by our Fr. Provincial Delegate, Rev. Fr. Allan Rieger, OCD. Our Clothing ceremony was included in the Sunday mass at Carmel of the Holy Spirit, Subic, Zambales.

The event can be considered as one of the highlights of the year, for it was graced by other communities under the Care of Carmel of the Holy Spirit, Subic.

From the province of Bataan, came 8 delegates, from the town of Sta. Cruz Zambales were more or less 15 Delegates. All in all, the total OCDS members who attended were more less 50 persons.

Even Father Provincial Delegate Allan Reiger, OCD, was very happy, to see the number of participants and attendees, since it was the first time that these three communities attended a celebration together, at least for this year.

After the clothing ceremony, Father Provincial Delegate gave a three hour talked about "Lectio Divina".

As for me and my girlfriend, this is one of those events that we would cherish, maybe for a lifetime. Since, it marks for us, the start of a greater challenge and commitment to continue our Ascent of Mt. Carmel.

I will be posting pictures as soon as we get them from our photographers.

Our Time to formally Enter Carmel is at Hand

Today was supposed to be the day, that we are to be clothed as OCDS-Novice 1 and formally enter the Secular Order of Discalced Carmelites (OCDS). Unfortunately, due to some fortuitous events and a little miss communication, it was delayed for two more weeks and if God is willing our clothing will be on the 11th of November, 2007.

Well, I don't believe in coincidence. And whatever the reason for the delay, God willed it and God has reasons for it. Whatever it may be, I know that someday it will be revealed to us surely to learn something from it.

Feast of St. Therese of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face

This morning, I attended mass for two reasons. First, it's the feast of St. Therese of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face. Second, it's the last day of the novena mass I had offered for my late mother Francisca, since last week was her first death anniversary.

I was really touched by the homily of our Mass Celebrant and by the music that was sung by the choir especially the Lord's Prayer, actually tears just fell out of my eyes as we sung the Lord's prayer this morning, for reasons that I myself could not really explain.

The homily was about, the 3 virtues of St. Therese which are Thrust, Humility and Simplicity. Since St. Therese, if I'm not mistaken, was given the title Doctor of the "little ways", She became the third Carmelite to be given the title Doctor of the Church.

Her "little ways" refers to the ordinary things that we do in our daily lives that can be offered and be made pleasing to God, so long that we offer it to Him with great love."

She became a Saint not because of anything else, but because of her "little ways" and actions that can be compared to a child, full of Humility, Simplicity and Thrust to Jesus our Lord and Savior.

    Our Identity

    Our Identity

We, the members of the Secular Order of Discalced Carmelites (OCDS) are faithful members of the Catholic Church, who are called upon to "live in allegiance to Jesus Christ" through "friendship with the One we know loves us" and in service to the Church, under the protection of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in the biblical tradition of the prophet Elijah, inspired by the teachings of St. Teresa of Jesus and St. John of the Cross and who are seeking to deepen our Christian commitment received in baptism.

    About OCDS Subic

    In Brief

Through the efforts of the OCD Sisters, Friars and fellow OCDS members, the St. Teresa of Jesus and John of the Cross Community, Subic community have grown continuously to date.

Starting with only a few members a year after the Mt. Pinatubo eruption, the Subic Secular Order of Discalced Carmelites (OCDS) became stronger as the years passed by thru the efforts of the OCD Nuns, our past community Presidents, and the Spiritual Guidance provided by the OCD Friars and OCD Brothers that continuously visits Subic Carmel of the Holy Spirit.

With a total number of 31 active members under going regular formation held during our regular monthly meeting, the Subic OCD Secular continuously aims to follow the guidance of the three Great Doctors of the Order, Sts. Teresa of Avila, John of the Cross, Therese of the child Jesus in knowing how to love God and how to befriend God with the help of the Blessed Mother Mary and her beloved Spouse St. Joseph.

    On Formation

In order to know more about the Order of Carmel Discalced, and to deepen our faith and love of God and His Church, regular formation class is conducted every second Sunday of the Month.

Using the New Constitution, the new statutes and with the adoption of the official structured formation manual, we are now grouped according to rank during our regular formation class. Each session is conducted with lectures coupled with time allotment for questions and answers, through this, each member can easily express their understanding, possible questions regarding the present topic that not only tends to bond the group but provides a wider understanding of the topic. Done with an encouraging environment and with formators that has already matured in Faith and wisdom, each formation session becomes a cherished moment to all especially for the new ones. Aside from these and the required reading of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, entrance to Carmel, Life and works of St. John of the Cross, The Dark Nights of the Soul, The Interior Castle of St, Teresa of Jesus, and other books the community also attends talks and retreats held in other Community that not only bonds us with other communities but also strengthens our commitments to the order.

Life in the formative years is a little bit hard, especially for the Aspirants, since most of the new members still do not understand the true purpose and importance of formation, couple this with complete adherence to the basics (daily prayers, readings of the required books: Welcome to Carmel, collected works of Sts Teresa of Avila and John of the Cross, Story of a soul, Journey to Carith, etc), things can really get awry at first. But once it becomes a habit and the importance and reasons realized, the hardships becomes a joyous moment and even becomes a cherish undertaking for truly the “Lord of Host lives, before whom we stand.”

    On Promotion

Studying the Orders’ origin and charism, the works of its Saints and the Church Catechism is just some of the requirements that one must undergo in order to be promoted. Add the self evaluation and the interview conducted by the council and the OCD friars it can really become more challenging than expected. But even so, if this is one way of measuring one’s commitment in becoming a true Secular Carmelite, expect its members to be more willing than ever, for the greater glory of God.
